The Spirit of Tabla (VIDEO)

Tabla, one of the oldest Indian drums to date, lends an increasingly common rhythm to movie soundtracks, world music compilations and fusion songs.

It was originally taught in a gurukul system, where each disciple had a guru who would help them understand the philosophy and art of tabla rigorously.

Samir Chatterjee, a musician and instructor, founded Chhandayan School of Music, a Manhattan-based institution that tries to sustain the spirituality of the practice while experimenting with different styles of music.
