Annie Clark, the multi-instrumental indie rock phenom who goes by St. Vincent is known for more than her musical talents. But now, Clark is attracting fans for yet another reason entirely: designing her own signature, lady-friendly guitar, designed specifically to fit a woman's frame.
Clark announced the exciting project in an Instagram post from 2015, noting the guitar was designed in collaboration with California instrument manufacturer Ernie Ball Music Man. Clark promised a more ergonomic approach with the design: "there's even room for a breast -- or two," she wrote.
"I was always finding when I was playing onstage and wearing various stage outfits the guitar would cut across one of the best features of the female body, which is your waist," Clark said in a recent interview with Guitar World, in anticipation of the guitar's March debut. She continued, "I carry my guitar pretty high so I had to make all of these costumes based on the fact that you wouldn’t be able to see if I had a waist or not. I wanted to make something that looked good and not just on a woman, but any person."
While other female rockers like Joan Jett have played a part in the creation of their instruments, Clark acknowledged that her role in designing a guitar from the "ground up," is a unique one for women:
I’m certainly glad to be a beacon for women and for anybody who likes music and my music. I’m glad that another guitar exists that is sympathetic to the female form.
Ernie Ball Music Man released a video in January, telling the story of how the guitar came to be. Watch the video to learn more below.
