Staci Appel Loses 2014 Iowa Congressional Race To David Young

Iowa state Sen. Staci Appel (D) lost to Republican David Young in the state's 3rd District Tuesday.

The race between Appel and Young was considered a top pick-up opportunity for Democrats, who hoped to replace the retiring Rep. Tom Latham (R). They also hoped to make Appel the first-ever woman to represent Iowa in Congress.

Young formerly served as Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley's (Iowa) chief of staff. Appel has served as Assistant Majority Leader in the state Senate.

She received help in her campaign from Emily's List, a group that works to elect women candidates who support abortion rights.
