Hanalei Bay is a massive cove on the North side of the Hawaiian island of Kauai, well known for surfing in the wintertime. But during the summer, the bay waters become calm and the waves that attract world-class surfers in the on-season disappear.

So, what do the locals and tourists have left to do when there is no surf to speak of?
Apart from racing outrigger canoes and swimming, they SUP. That's Stand Up Paddle boarding, a Hawaiian tradition that has spread around the globe as a popular recreational water sport.

If you've never taken a SUP board for a spin or if you've tried and failed miserably, here's a video from my trip this summer that might help. In it I learn to SUP in the very waters where the sport was born.
