What: Semi-Annual Star Party
Twice a year, Paul Chapman at the American Science and Surplus store in Jefferson Park invites customers into the store to play astronomer. In addition to chemistry sets, soldering irons, electronics, and a portable glass urinal that's meant to double as a wine carafe, the store stocks an array of telescopes. Chapman himself is something of a stargazing hobbyist, who's been examining the heavens from behind a telescope since a very young age. Tonight, he'll have a handful of telescopes out, and encourages aficionados to bring their own, as he leads the assembled star-lovers in a guided tour of the cosmos.
Despite the light pollution from the city, Chapman says that there will still be plenty to see. He's orchestrated the night around the full moon, so that if the stars are obscured by the city lights, you'll at least be able to explore the Moon's surface with him.
And if you find yourself needing two matching squirrel-cage blowers, or a package of rubber caterpillars, well, you'll be in the right place.
