NEW YORK -- President Obama sat down with several news anchors on Tuesday to preview his State of the Union speech, an annual tradition that's lasted through several presidencies amid a changing media landscape.
While the pre-SOTU lunch is off the record, it provides the president with an opportunity to outline the evening's speech for those anchoring Tuesday night's coverage.
However, Fox News' Shepard Smith revealed a few details from the lunch on air Tuesday -- all relating to the menu. After noting the lasagna, Smith described the thyme-roasted sea bass in detail, served along with green beans, butter beans and peas. "The food there?" Smiths raved. "You better stop it."
Smith wasn't alone enjoying lunch. The broadcast networks' evening news anchors -- ABC's Diane Sawyer, NBC's Brian Williams and CBS' Scott Pelley -- were at the White House, too, along with Fox News anchor Bret Baier, CNN's Wolf Blitzer, MSNBC's Chris Matthews, ABC's George Stephanopoulos and NPR's Melissa Block.
Sawyer will soon get some additional facetime with Obama away from her competitors. She'll interview Obama on Thursday, in what will be his first sit-down after delivering the State of the Union.
