There have been a small handful of Super Bowl rings that have gone up for sale recently.
And there is another one that went missing. The good news is police in Spokane, Wash., have recovered the 1985 Super Bowl ring belonging to Chicago Bears guard Stefan Humphries after it was stolen in a burglary that occurred last month.
Police also recovered a stolen Rose Bowl ring from Humphries’ playing days at Michigan but still missing are a Super Bowl XX pendant as well as a Big Ten championship ring, according to the Spokesman-Review.
“I was in a funk for a couple of weeks as a result of it,” Humphries told the Spokesman-Review. “It’s that sentimental attachment that you really can’t replace. … It’s priceless, it’s personal and it definitely is associated with some wonderful memories.”
With any luck, the pendant and other missing ring will turn up soon. They won’t be the easiest items to sell on the open market, that much is for sure.
Humphries doesn’t have the first Super Bowl XX ring that has gone missing. Walter Payton was without his Super Bowl ring for years after it mysteriously disappeared in 1996 after Payton gave it to a member of the Hoffman Estates (Ill.) High School basketball team and asked the kid to return it in a few days. The ring was discovered in a couch five years later and two years after Payton had died.
