Steny Hoyer Mocks 'Speaker Boehner' And His Agenda: It's 'Not Going To Happen'

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said Thursday of House Minority Leader John Boehner's aspirations to be the next speaker of the House: It's "not going to happen."

Boehner said at his weekly presser that one of the key reforms he would make, should he become the next speaker of the House, would be to allow lawmakers more time to read legislation before it's voted on.

"His hypothetical is so unreasonable and so unlikely to happen that it really doesn't bear commenting, other than to say we have provided for the time for people to read bills," said Hoyer when asked for comment.

"This is beating a drum that is not relevant," Hoyer said. "Members have opportunities to read bills. They have opportunities to read amendments. And we are giving them those opportunities."

Boehner's "read the bill" effort launched Thursday would require that lawmakers be given 72 hours to read legislation before a final vote on it is scheduled.
