LA has had some questionable billboards over the years. And most of them have been anything but aesthetic.
But LA artist Stephen Glassman has an idea that would bring billboards that are both beautiful and eco-friendly to our polluted city. The project is called Urban Air, and it would change billboards into hanging bamboo gardens.
As if that wasn't green enough, the forests will be Wi-Fi enabled and will contain sensors that collect and transmit local climate data such as temperature and air quality. Misters will water the bamboo automatically.
"My intention is to put a crack in the urban skyline so that when people are compressed, squeezed, stuck in traffic and they look up, they see an open space of fresh air," Glassman said in the video above.
The eco-artist is working on a full-scale prototype on a donated billboard but is looking for monetary donations to help him create "kits" for more billboards in LA and other cities. He has already raised over $18,500 on his Kickstarter campaign.
Glassman, who received the 2011 London International Creativity Award, first gained attention in the 1990s when he started putting up bamboo installations in urban areas devastated by the Rodney King Riots, Malibu Fires and Northridge Quake.
