Stephen Lynch Announces Senate Run For Massachusetts Special Election Seat

Another Dem Gets Into Massachusetts Senate Seat Race

Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) announced he was running for the special election for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts Thursday to replace John Kerry.

The candidate released a video to YouTube. "Stephen Lynch for Senate: He'll go to Washington to stand up, not fit in," says a narrator. The video emphasizes his background as an ironworker and hits on populist themes like against the Troubled Asset Relief Program and pushing back against Medicare and Social Security privatization.

The candidate is making an announcement at 4 p.m. in South Boston at Iron Workers Local 7 hall.

Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) has already announced his run and has the backing of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and top Massachusetts Democrats.

Gov. Deval Patrick announced Wednesday that his former chief of staff, William "Mo" Cowan, will be the interim senator before the special election on June 25.
