Steve Irwin's father said the cameraman who was with the star when he was killed by a stingray should not have discussed the details of his son's death on television.
Bob Irwin appeared in a special about the Crocodile Hunter for "Australian Story" on Australia's ABC and discussed cameraman Justin Lyons' March 2014 appearance on Channel 10. During the appearance, Lyons described how Irwin was stabbed "hundreds of times" by a stingray in 2006 while filming in Australia's Great Barrier Reef, and revealed his last words.
"I personally felt very sad and, to a degree, angry about what Justin had to say," Bob Irwin said. "For a lot of people trying to get on with with lives without Steve, it wasn't something that helped by any means."
Briano Coulter, a former member of Irwin's Croc Team who was with Steve Irwin when he died, previously offered to speak with Bob Irwin about the encounter that killed his son. He said he has always been respectful about the privacy the family has wanted.
"Not long after we lost Steve, I spoke to Bob and said if he ever wanted me to discuss the circumstances around Steve's passing I would be more than happy to discuss that with him. Because I thought for me, personally, if I lost my daughter or my wife or someone very, very close to me like that, for my own peace of mind I would probably want to know the circumstances," he said. "Bob thanked me and he said that he wouldn't like to have that discussion."
Last year, Bindi Irwin, 16, told People magazine that those who told her "time heals all wounds" were wrong.
"That is the biggest lie you will ever hear. It doesn't," she said. "That kind of sadness never goes away. It's like losing a piece of your heart that you never get back."
