A group of students at the University of Rochester protested outside professor Steven Landsburg's class Monday, the Democrat and Chronicle reported, over a recent post on his blog about unconscious rape victims.
More than 30 students held signs reading "Rape is not hypothetical" and "No one benefits from rape," WHEC reports.
Landsburg, an economics professor, sparked outrage when he asked in a March 20 blog post: "As long as I'm safely unconsious [sic] and therefore shielded from the costs of an assault, why shouldn’t the rest of the world (or more specifically my attackers) be allowed to reap the benefits?"
An online petition demanding UR President Joel Seligman censure Landsburg currently has 674 signatures.
The group Women Organized to Resist and Defend, or WORD, issued a "Call to Action" asking women to join their letter-writing campaign to the university to voice opposition to its response.
Landsburg issued a statement through the university on April 5, directing people to a new blog post and saying, "I am both sad and sorry that my recent blog post has distressed so many people so deeply, both on campus and off.
"I am particularly sad because many readers got the impression that I was endorsing rape, while my intent was to say exactly the opposite—namely that the horror of rape is so great that we should rethink accepted principles of policy analysis that might sometimes minimize that horror," Landsburg said.
But on Monday, students passed out fliers that read "Don’t Be Fooled by Landsburg’s Lying Apology," according to the Democrat and Chronicle.
"All we're asking is the university take disciplinary action of some form," Daniel Nelson, a UR graduate student who launched the petition, told YNN. "We're even thinking a written warning, something official to send the message to the university community that the university won't tolerate justifications of rape of any kind."
UR spokesperson Bill Murphy sought to distance the university from Landsburg's blog post in a statement issued to media outlets. "His views are his own; he does not speak for the University. The University disagrees with the content, which does not reflect its views or values."
Landsburg did not return a request for comment from The Huffington Post.
Students held a silent protest inside Landsburg's classroom in March 2012 after he defended radio show host Rush Limbaugh calling Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke a "slut."
