The tears hit my chest like sharp icicles, it was over. The storm had passed or was it just beginning? Less than half of the voting public chose the option who wore the moniker of hate. The majority, though it didn’t count, chose seasoned decency. It boggled the mind for it came with a tidal wave of uncertainty and questions which will linger for generations to come.

Having been a spiritual teacher, philosopher, educator and author and having passionately fought for human, LGBTQ, animal and environmental rights for nearly three decades, my life’s work was suddenly in one fell swoop, a moot point. That is how many of us feel, that our life’s work has all been washed away by the hand of demagoguery. What’s more, is that on March 22 I had a potent dream about who would win this horrible joke of an election and for whatever reason I felt it could be overcome, the truth altered. I was wrong like millions of others who are chronically optimistic.

Oh I know you think we mourn a particular politician, or the fact that we could have made history, electing the first woman President in the 240 years this good ole’ boys nation has existed. But that is not why our hearts bleed.

We bleed because we see the death of civility and decency, of human rights, of the environment, of equal pay and women’s rights, of healthcare; we bleed because we have to face that 47% of our nation is blind, the glitter of celebrity and wealth so intoxicating to those chronically dissatisfied with their own lives.

We see that on November 8th hate was chosen over equality for all; that vulgar was preferred to dignity and respectability; that the egotistical, greed mongering, tax-evading, superficial self-server, who has been handed power on a silver platter, will abuse it, as he has done in the history of his entitled life. We stand at the precipice of radical change, some of it personal as we unfriend those in social media and real life who chose hate.

For those who are wise, we see what Germany could not more than 50 years ago and that we are doomed to repeat history no matter what happens now. We already have repeated history sixteen years later, electing the uniquely unqualified via the antiquated Electoral College, verses the will of the American people. And in the final tally, it was uneducated white men and women, who in the end lifted the beast and handed him the keys to the White House.

Oh I know, you’re saying, “Sore losers, every one of you!” but we know you would be in mourning if our qualified but human candidate had won. After all the delusional obstructionists have bashed and blamed President Obama for 8 years for not fixing Bush’s mess fast enough. We will never be able to convince you or make you see what you’ve done because you are not capable to see an opposing view through the eyes of reason, you only see through the eyes of vitriol, hype, ignorance, anger and arrogance. This time we will hold you accountable as we watch this nation go backwards and witness the rise of the elite and the failing of the middle class and the disenfranchised. And that America is why we mourn.

It is the death of reason and common ground. We are not only divided but we must stay divided. Those who are spiritually awake and evolved cannot be found aligning ourselves to hate, to bigotry or degradation. This is a cosmic test to see who will enable the beast or stand-alone shrouded in integrity. It is a lesson in complacency…do we become complacent because he won? Those of us who speak of love and kindness cannot endorse the “horrible thing standing where it ought not.”

Ironically, yesterday as I was speaking with a friend, I heard a commotion and looked out the window at the exact moment a hawk soared toward me in pursuit of a white dove, nature’s mirror reflecting life.

To those who chose this, we pray for you. We know that opposite polarities are the stuff of free will and are essential to the evolution of humankind even if it must be dismantled first. We are decent enough to take a back seat as the observer allowing the hideous, the dysfunctional and tyrannical to run the show while we continue to march to our own drum beat…that which is loving and good and right and true and kind and compassionate and understanding. Few care if he will do a great job as Commander and Chief because he set an irreversible precedent, teaching that hate, bullying, bigotry, misogyny and demagoguery win. He taught millions that spreading hate is the way to success. The other half of the nation however, believes that no matter what you do love will always win in the end.

So do your best, take up your sickle of destruction and wear the mantel of false saviors and dictators and enjoy the consequences of the darkness you have chosen to become one with.

Just remember that in order to maintain self-respect and integrity, we can never support or endorse a soulless being or those he raises in power. Those who dance in the light will always confound and confuse those who can’t dance at all so you will find us using the tools of heaven to offset your tainted hearts and antiquated actions. We are now strangers in a strange land, foreigners to you because our doctrine is love and all-inclusiveness. We live kindness and recognize we must contribute to the bigger picture through continued acts of love, kindness and generosity; that no one, not even the leader of the free world, will ever be able to take that right or the right to love without measuring the cost, away from us.

So while you are undoing a nation just remember, “Those who stand in your shadow are the ones holding you up.” “Those who stand in your shadow are the ones holding this nation up.”
