How Not To Talk To A Woman On The Street

"Why don't you smile?" "Nice tits, honey!"

While these comments may not seem like they have much in common, when said to a stranger in a public space, they both qualify as street harassment.

The unfortunate truth is that unwanted public commentary (primarily from men) is a regular occurrence for most women -- unflattering, racist or just down right sexually-inappropriate comments are tossed out on the street on a daily basis. Not only is it disrespectful, but street harassment is a crude demonstration of how even a public sidewalk can be an unsafe place for a woman.

But misogynistic and abrasive comments aside, is approaching a stranger on the street ever OK? If a man is genuinely interested in getting to know a woman for more than her looks, what is a respectful way to initiate conversation? To find out, HuffPost hit the streets of New York to ask women for their thoughts, and had them share some of the most absurd, graphic, uncomfortable, rude (the list goes on...) things they've heard while walking down the street. Watch the video above to hear their responses.
