Pimples have generally been considered one of the worst emblems of youth, but teens with zits may turn out to be the ultimate winners as research has discovered that the skin of those with acne tends to look younger longer.
Scientists at King’s College London report that people who have previously suffered from acne have longer telomeres in their white blood cells compared to those with perfect skin. These telomeres ― sometimes referred to as protective caps ― help keep chromosomes from deteriorating. As a result, cells are better insulated against aging.
The study, published Wednesday in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, measured the length of white blood cell telomeres in 1,205 twins from the TwinsUK cohort. A quarter of the twins reported having experienced acne in their lifetime.
Dr. Simone Ribero, a dermatologist from the Department of Twin Research and Genetic Epidemiology at King’s College, said in a written release from the college: “For many years dermatologists have identified that the skin of acne sufferers appears to age more slowly than in those who have not experienced any acne in their lifetime. Whilst this has been observed in clinical settings, the cause of this was previously unclear.”
But now, according to Ribero, research suggests that the cause may be due to the fact that the length of telomeres is different in acne sufferers ― so much so that their cells are better guarded against the usual deterioration that comes with growing older.
Dermatologists have long noted that the skin of those with spotty faces appears to age more slowly than the skin of those who haven’t experienced acne. Indeed, wrinkles and other marks of aging often manifest themselves much later in people with acne. One reason for this, dermatologists have said in the past, could be the increased oil production in those with acne.
But in light of this new research, an even greater reason could be the difference in the length of telomeres.
If, in spite of the above good news, you still want to banish acne from your face, here are 10 super effective natural remedies for getting rid of those pimples once and for all.
But in the meantime, enjoy the fact that acne now may mean you’ll have the last laugh later in life.
