These days there is debate about the best forum for children to receive quality education: public schools, charter schools, private schools, school vouchers, and on and on. Home schooling, while still fringe, is growing in popularity, and some studies have even shown that home-schoolers perform better on standardized tests than public school students.
According to the Institute of Education Statistics, there were 1.5 million home-schooled students in America in 2007 -- that's 2.9 percent of the country's school-age population. Back in 1999, just 1.7 percent was home-schooled.
There are obvious reasons why home schooling might not appeal to everyone. However, there are cases where the practice has been effective in creating successful, educated and curious adults.
