Sue Simmons Admits: I Used To Drink Before Anchoring News

Thursday evening on New York's NBC affiliate, longtime WNBC news anchor Sue Simmons admitted to drinking before her newscast during the 1980s.

The New York Observer notes that Simmons made the confession on lifestyle show LX New York, which replaced the local 5PM newscast on WNBC.

Simmons — who anchored both an early evening newscast and the traditional 11PM newscast — told fellow guest Andy Cohen that she used to drink between the shows.

"It used to be acceptable that you could go out to dinner and have a martini," Cohen, the Bravo executive said to Simmons. "Did that ever happen?"

"Uh, yes, but that stopped in the mid '80s, late '80s," Simmons said, "because I looked in the mirror before--when I was about ready to go on the air--and my eyes were red."

Simmons added, "I mean, I didn't feel loaded or anything, but my eyes were red and that was enough to say, 'That's it.'"

Simmons gained national infamy in 2008 after an accidental on-air expletive-laden tirade. Shortly thereafter, the New York Post reported that Simmons was "famous for her liquid dinners between broadcasts, potty mouth and zany behavior," according to co-workers.
