UPDATED -- Lieutenant Andra Brown, a spokesperson for the San Diego police department, confirms to the Huffington Post that the death is still under investigation as a possible suicide. She also notes that the death is "in no way related to the Occupy San Diego protest," and that there is no foul play suspected.
The San Diego Medical Examiner has updated their press release to say that the circumstances surrounding the man's death are still under investigation. It previously said that the man accidentally fell to his death while hanging flyers.
PREVIOUSLY -- A man fell to his death Monday afternoon from the Civic Center Plaza parking structure in San Diego, and the police have confirmed he did commit suicide.
Witnesses told KTLA that they saw the man jump from the top floor of the garage at 3:15pm and land near the area that protesters have claimed for the "Occupy San Diego" movement.
Protester Toby Benjamin posted this message of condolence on Occupy San Diego's site yesterday:
Today was a day of great loss for Occupy San Diego, and the World -- one of the 99%, lost his life. While the events leading to this tragedy remain under investigation, we are deeply saddened by the loss. We ask that all Occupations join us in observing a moment of silence tonight, as a sign of respect and solidarity.
May his soul know peace, may we all learn and grow, and may our grief remain positive and productive. We are all the 99%.
Police Capt. Mark Jones told Sign On San Diego that, based on an initial investigation, the man who died did not appear to be affiliated with the Occupy SD community, but there were fliers found near his body with this text: "Important message to intelligent earthlings from your creators."
After the sudden death, Occupy SD protesters changed course from their planned evening march to a candlelit vigil instead, notes Sign On San Diego.
Despite the police's assertion that his death was a suicide, the San Diego Medical Examiner is maintaining that his death was an accident, reports local news outlet ABC 10. From the Medical Examiner site: "On the afternoon of 10/10/11, he had been in a parking structure downtown attempting to hang flyers on the outside walls. For unknown reasons, he lost his balance and fell out of the structure to the ground below."
