Initial ratings from Super Bowl XLIX show that Sunday night's game was quite historic.

The close matchup between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks brought in a 49.7 overnight rating -- the highest rating in Super Bowl history -- according to NBC Sports PR.

Ratings for the big game were up 4 percent from Super Bowl XLVIII between the Seahawks and the Denver Broncos in 2014, NBC Sports reported. The previous record was an overnight rating of 48.1, when the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers paired up in 2013.

The total number of viewers for the Patriots’ 28-24 victory over the Seahawks is expected to come sometime later on Monday.
