Survival of the Cooperators

The sun could not shine if the clouds didn't first step back and allow its rays through. Cooperation is the key to surviving.

We as humans are in a class of our own. Science would say it is our brains that set us apart from all else. We think, we build, we strive, we conquer. We have evolved into this powerful machine that lives and does. Science has made incredible discoveries about human existence, human evolution and ultimately human superiority.

In these discoveries we have claimed our place in this world as superior beings. We have taken the world as our own to do with it what we choose. We have claimed dominance over all else. We have taken scientific principles to heart and one in particular that has since jaded our connection to life.

Darwin's "Survival of the Fittest" has crept into our psyches in ways not relevant to its original meaning. It has separated us from one another in a degree that is detrimental to our existence. As we live our life striving to better ourselves and living in constant competition we miss out on a truly essential part of living which is coexistence.

If life is always about surviving and competing and proving our worth, we live dominantly in Ego and through ego we get tunnel vision.

If we stop to look around us we can see life sustaining itself, not with self-survival but by living through cooperation of species. A tree shades a plant. A squirrel grows an oak tree. A river provides sustenance for other life. The moon influences the tides. A midwife helps in birthing new life. A football team together scores the winning touchdown. And the examples can go on and on.

We as humans are not meant to live in isolation and self-fulfilling goals. Without one another we are but a bike without wheels. It is necessary for the bikes functioning to have those wheels, then the aid of someone to help install them, and the air needed to fill the tires. No race has ever been won with a wheelless bike, as no human could survive without effect of another human or even the effect and influence of other life on this planet.

Sustaining life in our biosphere (ecosystem) is reliant on cooperation of all species of life. All life on earth has co-evolved and continues to coexist with the help of one another. There's no escaping this fact.

Nothing survives without the help and influence of other life. We are dependent upon one another and need to start seeing all that surrounds us as equal to the breath in our lungs and the blood in our veins.

Tomorrow when you wake up and walk out the door take note of all that surrounds you and nourishes you and aids you in living and surviving your day. Your life is not about you managing your day and striving to come out on top. It doesn't work that way anymore. Your life is about accepting gifts from others and offering your hand in helping others.

We all live as one to survive. Survival of the fittest is not about solely surviving but about surviving as a whole unit, with all life, human, animal, plant, ether, microbes, minerals, etc. We are a biosphere of life existing for one another in a powerful dance of working together.

The sun could not shine if the clouds didn't first step back and allow its rays through. Cooperation is the key to surviving.
