Renowned screenwriter Diablo Cody announced today that she's working on a movie version of the beloved YA book series "Sweet Valley High."
Cody says she wants the movie's aesthetic to embody everything she loved about those colorful '80s:
"I want it to be wonderfully nostalgic," Cody told Indiewire. "I want it to be to the '80s what 'American Graffiti' was to the [early] '60s. I want it to be looking back on a really cool time and enjoying yourself and I want it to be glamorous and colorful and bubblegum and a feast for the senses. That's my plan."
The "Sweet Valley High" series first hit our bookshelves in 1983 and comprised over 150 books. It produced a TV show, which ran from 1994-'97, but until now, never a feature film.
We were thinking about the books and the style moments we'd like to see, and as we pored over the California clan's fashion moments, we realized: if we reincarnate "Sweet Valley" for the big screen, the style is going to look pretty darn hipster.
Were Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield the original Brooklynites? Long before Williamsburg became cool, the iconic twins were rocking plaid, thick glasses and ironic accoutrements back in their sleepy California town.
