Swiffer Makes Sweeping Statement About What Makes A Family

Ad Makes Sweeping Statement About What Makes A Family

After Cheerios received both kudos and bigoted backlash for featuring an interracial family in an ad, Swiffer is using a similar strategy. Only the brand went one further: The husband in its ad is an amputee, prompting outlets to note the commercial's even broader portrayal of a household.

The commercial (watch above) shows how Swiffer impacts the real lives of the Rukavina family in Los Angeles. She's black. He's white. He explains he's better at cleaning the house, though, he says, the chore has become slightly more difficult since losing part of his arm. Enter Swiffer.

"Most Inclusive Ad Ever?" AdWeek wrote in its headline. Jezebel, too, called the spot "mega-inclusive" but hoped that such presentations "will be so commonplace that we won't even be compelled to talk about it anymore."
