It has been a year since protesters in Syria first took to the streets to demand greater freedoms and political participation. As protests spread across the country, the Syrian regime of president Bashar Assad launched a brutal crackdown against protesters and opposition. The U.N. estimates more than 8,000 people have died in the violence since March 2011.
