HGTV stars Tarek and Christina El Moussa have split after seven years of marriage, People reported Monday.
“Like many couples, we have had challenges in our marriage,” the “Flip or Flop” couple, who have two young children together, said in a statement to People. “We had an unfortunate misunderstanding about six months ago and the police were called to our house in an abundance of caution. There was no violence and no charges were filed.”
The two added, “During the process, we are committed to our kids and being the best parents we can be. We will continue to work through this process civilly and cooperatively, and plan to continue our professional life together.”
The El Moussas, who acknowledged an “unfortunate misunderstanding” in their separation statement, had an altercation involving a gun back in May, according to TMZ.
The outlet reported that 11 deputies and one helicopter arrived at the couple’s Orange County home after receiving “a call of a possibly suicidal male with a gun.” Tarek allegedly ran out of the house with a gun and went down a hiking trail, and dropped the firearm once deputies asked him to do so.
TMZ said Tarek told the police he wanted to “blow off some steam” and only brought the gun to ward off snakes and mountain lions. The outlet reported the cops confiscated five guns from the house, including an AR-15 rifle.
A rep for HGTV confirmed the show will remain on the air in an emailed statement to The Huffington Post:
“We admire and appreciate Tarek and Christina’s great work on ‘Flip or Flop.’ When it comes to matters related to their own family, we respect their privacy and honor any decision that works best for them and their children. HGTV is currently airing episodes of ‘Flip or Flop’ and the series will continue production as scheduled.”
HuffPost has reached out to reps for the couple and will update this post accordingly.
