"Orphan Black" star Tatiana Maslany is reportedly up for a lead role in Gareth Edwards' upcoming "Star Wars" film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Maslany is screen testing for the role in addition to Rooney Mara ("Girl With a Dragon Tattoo"), with Felicity Jones ("The Theory of Everything") also of potential interest. Edwards' project is a stand-alone film set to debut in December 2016.

Maslany has gained critical acclaim for her role in BBC America's sci-fi show "Orphan Black," in which she plays multiple clones. But despite her demonstrated acting prowess, the star has continually been passed over for an Emmy nomination. Asked about her most recent snub at a Comic-Con panel for "Orphan Black," Maslany said she's just grateful to be a part of such an accomplished show.

"We're at a point where television is extremely exciting," she said. "I just feel really lucky to be at this point in television history making a show like this."

Whether or not Maslany agrees that her overlooking is undeserved, a high-profile film like "Star Wars" could be the perfect thing to push her into the mainstream stardom her work on "Orphan Black" has warranted for years.

Representatives for Maslany and Disney were not immediately available for comment.

"Orphan Black" returns for its third season on April 18, 2015 on BBC America.
