When Taylor Swift releases a new single it's inevitably an opportunity to carefully dissect the lyrics and determine just which of her past romances left her jilted, heartbroken, and full of seemingly endless material for her hit songs.
With the release of "I Knew You Were Trouble," the latest single off of her forthcoming record "Red," we're again left to play detective as to who inspired the dubstep-influenced tune.
In an interview with "Good Morning America", the 22-year-old explained that the song is about "kind of being frustrated with yourself because you have your heart broken and you knew when you first saw that person you saw all these red flags and you just went for it anyway."
Red flags -- yep, we can relate. But who in Swift's repertoire of past suitors could have come with so many warning signs? Here at HuffPost Celebrity, we deduced that her last single, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," was written about Jake Gyllenhaal.
And we have to say, our detective skills are telling us that "I Knew You Were Trouble," was likely written about John Mayer. It's true that Swift already penned "Dear John," which Mayer later said "really humiliated" him.
At the time, Swift refused to comment on Mayer's hurt feelings, but she recently decided to feign offense, telling Glamour the singer's comments were "presumptuous," because she never discloses whom her songs are about. Uh huh, sure, Taylor. Keep saying that.
Swift has been linked to plenty of men, including Garrett Hedlund, Chord Overstreet and Will Anderson. And she's known to have dated Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner, Lucas Till and Cory Monteith, in addition to Gyllenhaal and Mayer.
Of all those men, Mayer, with his reputation as a notorious womanizer, is the only former flame who could possibly earn the lyrics:
A new notch in your belt is all I'll ever be/ And now I see, now I see, now I see/ He was long gone when he met me/ And I realize the joke is on me
Those lyrics and the song's chorus, "Cause I knew you were trouble when you walked in/ So shame on me now," echo Swift's sentiment in "Dear John," when she sings, "And I'll look back and regret how I ignored when they said run as fast as you can."
So why is Swift rehashing her heartbreak over Mayer?
Some have suggested that at the time, then-19-year-old Swift may have lost her virginity to the singer, and was devastated when he simply added her to the long list of women in Hollywood that he'd dated or bedded. Though we can't say for sure the song is about Mayer, that theory seems credible enough to provide Swift with enough angst and heartbreak to fill more than a couple songs.
