A Michigan teacher is now on paid administrative leave after allegedly pouring hot tea on two students involved in a fist fight.
Skyler Henion, 15, and Dillon Anderson, 18, had been engaged in an intense texting war before the argument got physical at Hastings High School on Jan. 17, WWMT reports.
Henion told the station the minor burns he sustained from the hot tea hurt more than the bruises he received in the fight. His mother later reported the incident to police.
But Anderson told WOOD TV that he hopes the teacher isn't charged with any wrongdoing.
"She wasn't exactly the biggest person and she had her arms full with bags and stuff so she just kinda did what had to be done," he told the station.
Henion said his peers told him the teacher warned the pair to stop several times before taking action, but he still questions her reaction.
"I don't know if it's the best way she could have took it," he told WMMT.
Police also said they were told the teacher warned the students before pouring the tea, according to the Associated Press.
The incident is still under investigation.
The Grand Rapids Press collected several user comments about the incident and pointed out many readers agreed with the teacher's actions.
"Well, there probably wasn't a hose readily available to spray them with," one commenter said, "so you have to make do with what you have!"
UPDATE:
Supporters have rallied behind the teacher, now identified by WOOD TV as Vicki Sleevi.
On Wednesday, a Facebook page was created by supporters of the Hastings High School teacher and has already garnered more than 1,000 "likes."
"Mrs. Sleevi rulez more than tea!" the page's description reads. "This is a page dedicated to supporting Mrs. Sleevi and the impact she has had on the student body of HHS and the community as a whole."
As for any potential legal action, the Grand Rapids Press reports police are considering the fist fight and the tea incident as two separate matters, though no charges have yet been filed.
