Ted Koppel: As U.S. Withdraws From Iraq, Questions Remain About American Presence (VIDEO)

The U.S. military is completing its withdrawal from Iraq later this month, but is America really leaving? That's the question journalist Ted Koppel sought to answer on his recent trip to Iraq.

Nine years ago, the veteran reporter was embedded with troops as the War in Iraq began. Since then, 4,500 troops have died. Some 32,000 were wounded, many gravely. And the U.S. has spent $1 trillion to fight insurgents and bring down Saddam Hussein.

According to Koppel's report on NBC's "Rock Center With Brian Williams," the troops are currently in the process of rebuilding and training the Iraqi military. But as U.S. soldiers return home, some 16,000 people will remain in country, manning the largest embassy in the world. Most are Americans, and they must now work without military protection.
