"Testimonios" Shows Bold, Colorful Works From Non-Traditional Makers (PHOTOS)

Bold, Colorful Works From Non-Traditional Makers

The rich and colorful exhibition "Testimonios" celebrates non-traditional works created by non-traditional makers. The collection, which numbers in the hundreds, features pieces made from the powerful human spirit in difficult circumstances. With rich colors and richer histories, the show depicts the ultimate triumph of the human spirit.

Pluralism rings proudly throughout the works, both in the diverse media represented and the multicultural group of artists, including makers from Panama, the Caribbean, Mexico and Texas. Spirituality, history and imagination guide the heartfelt collection, each one created from an unfathomable story. In one, a group of handkerchief drawings were created by Chicano inmates in Texas relaying their dreams to their loved ones. In another, female immigrants from Mexico exchange tales of crossing the border by embroidering their stories on used border patrol uniforms.

Learn the stories, hear the legends, see the hope and beauty that led to artistic creation. "Testimonios: 100 Years Of Popular Expression" features work from Gregorio Marzan, Martin Ramirez, Margarita Cabrera and Ejlat Feuer, among others. It will show at El Museo del Barrio in New York until May 6, so there's still time to make it if you haven't seen the exhibition yet.
