A Devine, Texas, teen died in the region's torrential floods Sunday night while driving home from prom.
Alyssa Ramirez, 18, was a few miles from her home when her car stalled out and was swept away by the floodwaters. She called her father and 911 when she realized she was in trouble, her aunt Roberta Ramirez told NBC affiliate WOAI, but "it was just too much and too quick."
A search crew found her body and car the next morning, Fox San Antonio reported.
“They said she looked just as beautiful, she just looked like she was sleeping," her aunt told the Fox affiliate. “They rest assured that she was a very strong believer and she has her place in heaven and they’ll meet her again soon.”
Ramirez was a homecoming queen, student council president, yearbook editor, cheerleader and star athlete in tennis and volleyball who dreamed of becoming an optometrist, an obituary provided by the Hurley Funeral Home said.
Ramirez is one of at least eight people killed by the massive floods that swept across Texas and Oklahoma over the holiday weekend. There are at least 12 people missing and thousands displaced after more than 1,000 homes were damaged or destroyed. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has declared disasters in 37 counties.
