Thanksgiving is a time to reflect and express gratitude for all that we are blessed to have. For me, it’s also a time to pay tribute to those who have made a difference in our lives.

In Iraq, where I commanded operations in the volatile Diyala Province, my formation consisted of thousands of our nation’s finest men and women in uniform. For 15 months, they poured their hearts and souls into the mission – one that many deemed impossible. Ten years later (and really, forever), I am thankful to them for accomplishing what they were sent to Iraq to do – everything ranging from combat operations to community engagements to humanitarian works.

Their experiences were indescribable. They were brave, courageous, persistent and kind. It was my honor to lead these amazing Americans and witness their heroism and courage first hand. This is valor – a series of noble acts over a period of time under harsh conditions. And valor must be acknowledged and appreciated.

This Thanksgiving, a great organization is stepping up to recognize our military community and honor current service members, veterans and their families. The Robert R. McCormick Foundation will be coordinating a concert to be broadcast this weekend as part of its America Salutes You campaign.

The concert was paid for by ticket sales and sponsorship, and the Foundation is covering all fundraising costs to ensure that 100 percent of donations will be granted to non-profit organizations assisting veterans, service members and their families:

Sometimes it takes more than valor and appreciation when our service men and women come home. It often takes organizations like the ones above, those equipped to handle community services for our veterans, their families, and our families of the fallen, to secure long-term quality of life.

This generation of veterans and their families, like all generations, are wired to serve. They should be defined by their future potential, which is enormous. As their needs evolve, we can provide flexible and responsive services that enable them to succeed where they live.

This Thanksgiving weekend, please join me in taking these small steps:

  • The television concert will air nationally over Thanksgiving weekend as well as on select radio stations. Visit americasalutesyou.org to find your local listing.
  • Tweet about it using #ASY2016.
  • Go online and donate today at americasalutesyou.org/donate. Give to support services for our veterans, service members, and families, including families of our fallen.
  • Donate $10 by texting “FREEDOM” to 80077.

Our military communities thank you.
