On Thursday, people across the United States will celebrate Thanksgiving in the most American of ways: by stuffing their faces full of turkey, cranberry sauce and all the trimmings they can fit on a table. They'll top it all off with gobs of gravy, then follow the calorie bomb up with a nap before muscling down pumpkin pie.

While overeating on the fourth Thursday of November remains an American tradition, the U.S. isn't the only country in the world that celebrates by gorging. Here's a look at how people in other nations use food to celebrate just about everything, including freedom, religion and even death.
