On Thanksgiving it is a custom to give thanks, giving special recognition on that day to what we cherish.

Staying in the moment, being mindful and finding positive ways to view yourself and the world are all crucial to overall happiness and mental health.

Whether you are a high school student preparing to apply to college, a college student coming home for Thanksgiving, or a parent of one of these students, this holiday can be a stressful time. That stress can sometimes keep you from focusing on what this holiday is all about.

Creating individual mantras can combat negative thoughts and transform life challenges. Students (and parents) using them report success during demanding academic years in high school, the college application process, and navigating the college experience.

It's great to create your own mantra that speaks to you and uses a positive spin to put a stop to stress and anxiety.

Here are some examples for students:

  • I can do well and be happy.
  • If I focus and do the best I can, it will work out.
  • There is a college I will be accepted to where I will be happy.
  • If I am patient and follow my plan, I will feel better.

Try one of these or create your own. Take a few breaths and listen to your words of wisdom. It will help you to put aside the stress so you can better enjoy the Thanksgiving celebration. You can transform the holiday, and your high school and college experience!
