14 Times Joe Biden Was So Joe Biden

14 Times Joe Biden Was So Joe Biden

Love him or hate him, Vice President Joe Biden has spent the last five years establishing himself as America's charming but at times aloof favorite uncle.

As second in command, Biden has done it his way. Whether engaging in uncomfortable displays of affection, tripping over his words or aggressively defending the administration and its initiatives, the vice president has done things with a certain flare that often leaves us saying, "That's so Biden."

On Tuesday night, Biden played true to form when he made not one, but two errant phone calls to people he believed to be Marty Walsh, Boston's newly elected mayor. Neither of them actually was, but that didn't stop the vice president from leaving a voicemail that included the now-iconic Bidenism, "holler man!"

Now let's revisit some of our vice president's classic Joe Biden acts. Tweet us your favorite using the hashtag #thatssobiden: 1. When he called the passage of President Barack Obama’s landmark health care legislation “a big f*cking deal” on live television.

2. That time he told a senator in a wheelchair to stand up and wave.

3. His entire performance in the 2012 vice presidential debate against Paul Ryan (R-Wis.). It was pretty much this:

4. When he suggested the Irish prime minister's mother was dead. She wasn't.

"But the taoiseach knows a lot about it, his mom lived in Long Island for ten years or so, God rest her soul and uh um, although wait, your mom's still alive, it was your dad [who] passed. God bless her soul!"

5. When he assured us all that Obama has a really big stick…

6. When he mistook a senator for his dead colleague.

During Democrat Cory Booker's swearing in as the new senator from New Jersey in October, Biden had a mix up when attempting to bring Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) to the podium.

"Come on up here, Frank ... Bob," the vice president said. Booker was elected to replace Frank Lautenburg, who died earlier this year at the age of 89.

7. When Biden went on "Meet the Press" and endorsed gay marriage before he was supposed to.joe biden

Although the Obama administration had planned to reveal the president’s support for same-sex marriage as a "surprise" later on, Biden accidentally blew it by announcing his personal support for gay marriage six days before the president became the first in U.S. history to publicly support same-sex marriage while in office.

White House adviser David Plouffe was reportedly livid with Biden after his rogue announcement, according to "Double Down," a new book about the 2012 campaign.

"WHAT THE F*CK? was his [adviser David Plouffer’s] reaction when he took a look at the transcript. We were going to do this! In the next two weeks! As a fucking surprise! HOW CAN THIS HAVE HAPPENED?!" the authors write.

8. But then was reportedly the cutest VP ever. joe biden

After Biden ruined the president’s announcement and pissed off Obama’s advisers, Biden told a confidant, "I don't understand why everyone's so mad at me," according to “Double Down.”

9. When Biden called House Republicans a bunch of "Neanderthals."

Speaking on the anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act in September, Biden castigated Republicans who had fought to stall the legislation's reauthorization earlier in the year.

"Did you ever think we'd be fighting over, you know, 17, 18 years later to reauthorize this?" he asked. "Well, you know what? The thing they didn't like, they said we like it the way it is [without the new protections added in] -- believe me, they don't."

Republicans failed to prevent the law from being reauthorized.

10. When he flirted with older women on the campaign trail.

He did this a lot, planting more than a few kisses on supporters.

Or when he flirted with this biker...

Or flirted while swearing in senators...

At a mock swearing-in at the beginning of the year, Biden showed off his trademark lovable-but-sometimes-overly-affectionate-uncle humor, giving out hugs, kisses and hair-touslings to the families of incoming senators.

Then things got really awkward.

"Spread your legs, you're gonna be frisked," he said to the husband of Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.)

11. That time Biden's mind was blown by the stuff college cheerleaders do on hard wood:

“Guess what, the cheerleaders in college are the best athletes in college," Biden told a group of student athletes at Newport High School in New Hampshire. “You think, I’m joking, they’re almost all gymnasts, the stuff they do on hard wood, it blows my mind.’’

12. When he wore his badass aviators to see Pope Francis:joe biden pope

13. When he called Barack Obama the first bright, clean, articulate black person in the mainstream.

In 2007, during his brief run for the Democratic presidential nomination, then-senator Joe Biden called then-senator Barack Obama the "first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy," Biden told the New York Observer. "I mean, that's a storybook, man."

He later issued a statement apologizing for the comments.

14. That other time when he said you can't go to 7-Eleven without an Indian accent.

In a 2006 C-SPAN series called "Road to the White House," Biden expressed his support for Indian-Americans in Delaware by saying, "I've had a great relationship. In Delaware, the largest growth in population is Indian-Americans moving from India."

“You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I'm not joking," Biden said.
