Ghaith Abdul-Ahad traveled to the front lines of Aleppo for PBS and compiled one of the most comprehensive accounts of the raging battle between Syria's rebels and the regime of president Bashar Assad.

Rebels regrouped in the country's largest city Aleppo in late July in an attempt to force the Syrian army out of the region. While Aleppo previously was largely spared form the vioelnce, the city is now at the center of the battle between the regime and opposition.

According to Abdul-Ahad, the outcome of the fighting in Aleppo is crucial for the evolution of the revolt. "If the rebels can take over the city, they will continue their march on [the capital] Damascus. If the government manages to defeat the rebels in Aleppo, that’s the end of this stage of the revolution, and there will be regrouping into a different stage. So the outcome really matters," the reporter writes.
