Hair Alert: Best Bangs For Your Face Shape

Snip. Snip.

Bangs are one of those features that can dramatically transform a person's appearance in a matter of minutes. The growing-out phase may discourage some people from committing to bangs, but we believe that with the right styling, a fringe is flattering on every face shape.

With the right style, you can add more definition to your oblong, oval-shaped face or soften up the high points of your heart-shaped face. Need help determining which bangs work best for your face shape? Scroll down for celebrity inspiration as well as tips from Mario Russo, the owner and lead stylist of Boston's Salon Mario Russo.

"Whether you have thin or thick hair, side-swept bangs can easily be styled and blow-dried off to the side of the face," Russo says. "Make sure your bang is cut thick, so that it doesn’t appear too soft or too wispy, which for a round face can be unflattering. Side-swept bangs work well with both long and short haircuts, especially cuts with layers and angles that provide the hair with more shape and definition."

"Heart-shaped faces can benefit from wispy fringe because of the way the hair is layered and feathered," says Russo. "This texture softens the shape of the face and wispy bangs are easy to style in multiple ways -- off to the side, towards the face or back."

"For someone with an oval face, blunt bangs can be very flattering," says Russo. "To make the style less severe, angle off the sides of the bangs to be a bit longer than the rest of the fringe. This will help to better incorporate your bang into your hairstyle.”

"Ask your stylist for heavy fringe that dusts just below the eyebrows," says Russo. "If done correctly, [it] can complement both long and short haircuts."
