The second part of History Channel's five-part dramatization of "The Bible" continued working its way through the Old Testament. This latest block of stories included Samson destroying the Philistine temple and perhaps one of the most famous stories to come out of the Bible.
It was a gritty and graphic depiction of the story of David and Goliath. Not only were viewers treated to the classic image of David taking down the behemoth with naught but a slingshot, he also scalped the giant after it fell to the ground.
The series is a major achievement for creators Mark Burnett and his wife Roma Downey. It also marks Burnett's first foray into scripted television. And it debuted in a big way for the couple. Last week's premiere became the most-watched cable entertainment telecast of the year with 13.1 million total viewers.
A writer for the Washington Times hoped that the success of "The Bible" was indicative of changing tastes in the viewing audience. She wrote, "Maybe the entertainment pendulum has finally started swinging away from manufactured hubris like 'Celebrity Apprentice' and 'American Idol,' and back in the direction of engaging story telling," even if the first part was a bit "cheesy."
