The CW is moving freshman drama "Cult" to Friday nights at 9 p.m. EST beginning March 8, the network announced Wednesday.
The Matt Davis mystery about a journalist trying to track down his missing brother (and the obsessive TV fans who might be behind his disappearance) drew only 941,000 viewers for its series premiere, and dropped to 877,000 viewers in its second outing, both episodes failing to rise above a 0.3 rating in the adults 18-49 demo.
While a shift from prime midweek real estate to the so-called "Friday death slot" is usually seen as a killing blow for most series, as HitFix points out, The CW is one network where the rule doesn't always apply. "Nikita" has been able to carve out a solid niche for itself on Fridays at 8 p.m., while "Supernatural" flourished for two seasons at 9 p.m. before being moved back to midweek to follow "Arrow" on Wednesdays. Likewise, similar genre entries like NBC's "Grimm" and Fox's "Fringe" were able to maintain steady ratings on the less competitive night, so it's possible that "Cult" will accomplish the same thing without having to go up against "NCIS: Los Angeles" and Fox and NBC's comedies in the 9 p.m. Tuesday hour.
Starting March 5, The CW will begin airing encore episodes of its various series on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST, beginning with "Beauty and the Beast."
