For those who were wondering, this is how Roy Moore will represent Alabama on a national and global stage. Having been handed some George Soros red meat by the host, these are comments he made on American Family Radio on Monday,

Soros is certainly trying to alter the voting populous and if that’s true, he’s pushing an agenda. His agenda is sexual in nature. His agenda is liberal and not what Americans need. It’s not our American culture. Soros comes from another world I don’t identify with. I wish I could face him directly and I’d tell him the same thing that no matter how much money he’s got, he’s still going to the same place that people who don’t recognize God and morality and accept his salvation are going. And that’s not a good place.

And this is what Roy Moore said when he was asked to account for the anti-Semitic tone of his remarks.

What they’ve done to me is not only unforgivable, it’s pure hated and it’s pure spite and it’s pure evil and it’s wrong, Moore said in the interview. They have made up stuff I would never even consider doing. They’ve been successful. The press has been apart of it. It’s the definition of fake press. This is the most dirty political race I’ve ever been in and I think that anybody could be in.

What does any of this craziness even mean? Nothing, of course.

  • Soros has an agenda that is sexual in nature?
  • His agenda is liberal and not what Americans need?
  • It’s not our American culture?
  • He’s still going to the same place that people who don’t recognize God and morality and accept his salvation are going?

These are the babblings of a deranged, inflamed, fever-driven mind, and in light of the recent, quite creepy sexual misconduct revelations, one can easily surmise the volcanic scale of the lusts that grip and torment Roy Moore, even at the age of 70, such that he imputes them to everyone else, and assumes anyone subject to them will roast with unrequited passion for all eternity (except, of course, Roy Moore himself).

When faced with this kind of vulgarity – which starts with the premise (so grotesque to fathom from someone who is a spearhead of the Christian “pro-life” movement), that we are, by nature, not simply inadequate and partial, but debased and evil – Republicans and Democrats in Alabama alike are at a point where partisan identification should not mean anything, actually. Roy Moore represents the primitive, punitive, medieval darkeness that creeps upon the land. All of us – Republicans, Democrats, and Pastafarians alike – who don’t particularly wish to hasten the Rapture and plunge into the abyss need to stand together and say with one voice, GTFO MOFO. You Shall Not Pass.

Unfortunately, as part of the cultural inversion of our times, this sort of irresponsible, unaccountable rant has become the norm in the Republican Party, enabled by the cynical, but tactically brilliant, awareness that such rhetorical obduracy works, that the self-righteous shall inherit the scorched earth.

It’s a simple formula, really, akin in boxing to weigh-in posturing and relentless counterpunching. Let’s break it down.

  • Freebase. Play to the darkest and dirtiest corners of the Republican Party base. The religious wing-nuts. The 2nd Amendment gun-nuts. The business numb-nuts. The Constitutional fundamentalists. The white supremacists. Light that shit up and watch those fevered minds burn.
  • Never Apologize. Never ever take responsibility for your words or your actions. Never even admit to yourself you might be wrong, irresponsible, Never concede you play loose with the truth and trade in the darkest and most sinister myths and stories, that your entire mission in life is to scare people, divide them, and turn them against each other on behalf of a spurious, ill-kempt, incoherent vision of purity.
  • Double Down. Never apologize is the least of the reaction. If someone hits you, smack them back twice as hard. Then intensify the claims, magnify the myths, further stir the most chaotic emotions and most paranoid fantasies of the gothic mind. Roy Moore is just using the playbook gifted to him by Donald Trump and Steve Bannon.
  • Rubber-Glue. Whatever underhanded and devious behavior you’ve undertaken or encouraged or with which you’ve been charged by your “enemies” – we can use “fake news” as an example – simply return the serve with the insouciance of the prep school pretty boy. I’m rubber, you’re glue. No. You’re fake news! Fake news! Fake news!
  • Play the Blame Game. Always, always, reverse the terms of the debate. Always, always play the part of the victim (for instances of this style, see recent accounts from Sebastian Gorka, Kellyanne Conway). Always, always stick to the ahistorical, fact-deficient narratives that tap seductively into the most infantile and animalistic yearnings of our species – that human life is laced with personal danger and threat, that evil dwells within anyone we don’t know or recognize, that we are personally and specifically the targets of vast and evil forces against which we must constantly be vigilant.

This Freebasing style so favored by the Trump / Bannon / Moore posse is emotionally satisfying and politically effective in its own way, I suppose. But it has nothing to do with – and actually is entirely at odds with – the job of governing, of serving the people whom you represent. All of them. But for Roy Moore, surfing the MAGA base to national office is not about governing. It is about delivering us to the end of days.
