During a "Chat with Champions" book talk at Skidompha Library in Damariscotta, Maine, a person in the audience asked what was the hardest part of writing The Price They Paid: Enduring Wounds of War.

My book began as a biography of Major James T. Newman, the legendary commander of an air cavalry troop in Vietnam, who led his men into the most intensive helicopter combat ever. It took me a long time to realize that the story wasn't just about Newman but about how the war changed all of them -- and many of their families as well.
