Spring break conjures up images of bikinis and booze on the beach, but the tradition actually goes back 2,000 years to the days of the Roman and Greek empires.

Just like modern kids, young people in the days of yore partied to celebrate the arrival of spring, and of course, the season of fertility, which they'd celebrate by honoring the god of wine.

Modern-day spring break in the U.S. can be traced back to the 1930s, when college students gathered in Florida for swim meets -- and to drink, too.
