I admit I'm obsessed with my iPod, I take it everywhere with me; doing laundry, grocery store, car dealership everywhere, where I goest, the iPod goest, I even take it with me to the shower except paranoia tends to set in and I spend half my shower wondering if water will get into it and if I can, I hurry up and go back to my iPod as quickly as possible. This is a bigger distraction than Facebook.
Every day I clean the screen with an alcohol pad and make sure it's cover is on properly, I take better care of my iPod than I do myself, and when it's time to go out, I toss my cell and book carelessly into my bag while the iPod stays in my hand. I've noticed when walking I tend to grip it like at any moment it'll spring out of my hand, which when it does, I feel like my heart is gonna jump out of my throat.
Which isn't to say, I've had more than my share of accidents with past iPods, including one horrifying incident in which somehow it fell off the bed and onto the floor. I of course wasn't paying attention and put the heel of my foot right through the screen. I cried like I lost my best friend and broke several driving laws on the way to the apple store, where some guy at genius bar took one look at my poor cracked machine, said It would have been easier to run over it with the car and told me it would be 300 bucks to fix the screen.
I lived with the crack until the newer version came out and then that could cost me 50 bucks more than it would have to get the screen fixed.
I also make sure my software is constantly up to date, which is a pain in the neck itself because Apple has just released their new software and sent millions of users into panic mode when we couldn't figure out to make the new stuff work on the old iPod and actually managed to crash their system.
It's too much too fast. We barely survived the Facebook overhaul, which although it looks amazing, is so confusing trying to learn the new features. It's the same for the iPod, it has all these great features but who has enough time to actually sit down and comb through each new one?
I'm not saying we need to go back to the old days of technology where you bought a CD player and stock in Durcell because the stupid thing would drain after three days, but Apple or whoever needs to understand that we can't move as fast as they turn out the device.
Plus what's also irritating is you just plop down mega bucks for this awesome toy and suddenly four months later it's useless.
I wish they would take into consideration that times are tough, money's tight and we can't always have the flashiest toy. Some of us need to save for our future, but we feel like if we don't keep up with the Jones,' we'll get left behind and who wants that?
So the question we really have to ask ourselves is, do we go along with these new devices and software updates that leave us screaming for the Head of Apple Steve Wozniak, or do we say "forget it, until we are told that this could save the human race, we'll just sit back and enjoy the ride?"
I'm not sure but I know one thing, I wish they wouldn't make things so expensive on the iTunes store, one 15 buck gift card does nothing. But that's another bone of contention.
I don't know we are necessarily in a bad place with all these changes, but it should happen gradually before we become so overwhelmed that we call up Apple support in hysterics.
Which never works because they never pick up the freaking phone. This past weekend, I was on the phone with them from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. EST and got nowhere, each person telling me they do something and it never happened. My level of frustration was almost epic until I figure out how to do it myself.
That's also another key piece, they give us this amazing new technology, but there's no real background on how it works or what to do if something doesn't work and as someone who's on her 3rd iPod touch, I've gotten on a first name basis with the guys from Genius Bar.
So what's the next step in the iPod world? We can already locate our iPods left on a plane in Switzerland using the Internal GPS but have we forgotten what life was like before that? When the coolest toy in the world was those NANO pets or even before that, when everyone had to have a game boy? Have we forgotten our days before iPhones and iPads when we actually had to think for ourselves?
