Earlier this week, comedy legend Carol Burnett voiced some displeasure to Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert on how sitcoms these days "feel like they're written by teenage boys in a locker room."
Catching some of that not-so-subtle shade is "The League," a raunchy FX comedy about a fantasy football league and its members. The cast of "The League" stopped by HuffPost Live on Friday, and when the conversation turned to Burnett they were quick to fess up about being a somewhat juvenile humor-centric show.
"It's so true and she's totally my hero and I feel like she's criticizing me," Katie Aselton, who plays Jenny on the show, said with a wince. "I'm so ashamed. Carol Burnett, I'm sorry."
Burnett's comments then led to a lively discussion of how "smart" comedies these days almost try to make a joke dumb enough to where it can be considered absurdity, thus making it a smart joke again. Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, whose show "Key & Peele" is lumped in the same category as "The League," also joined in the discussion after crashing the interview.
"Oh God, that just ruined my day," Aselton joked later.
