'The Mentalist' Wraps Up The Red John Storyline, Prepares For A Big Jump In Time (VIDEO)

'The Mentalist' Wraps Up The Red John Story

Patrick Jane finally got his confrontation with Red John on "The Mentalist," and while he thought it was Gale Bertram, that turned out not to be the case. Bertram lured him to a church where he intended to kill him. Instead, the real Red John stepped out and shot and killed Bertram. Who was it?

It was Sheriff Tom McAllister, who quickly went from sinister and arrogant to sniveling and begging for his life the moment Jane got the upper hand. Zap2It's Rick Porter thought the reveal was a bit of a letdown -- McAllister as Red John left a lot of questions.

McAllister ran away, but Jane caught up to him and proved just how personal this was to him. With McAllister again begging to live, Jane asked him if he was sorry he killed Jane's wife and daughter. He then asked him if he was afraid to die. When McAllister answered in the affirmative to both, Jane said, "Good." He then proceeded to choke McAllister to death.

Series creator Bruno Heller promised TV Line that there would be consequences for Jane's action, as well as a major shift for the show. Next week, the action jumps ahead two years with the team scattered. "‘A great weight has been taken off Jane’s shoulders — and to that degree a weight has been taken off the show/," Heller said of wrapping the Red John era.

"The Mentalist" heads into uncharted territory -- and a two-year jump -- starting Sunday at 10 p.m. EST on CBS.
