"The New Normal" star Ellen Barkin took to Twitter to express her outrage over a Utah NBC affiliate refusing to air the new series about a gay couple who is having a baby via a surrogate.
KSL, which has previously refused to air last season's "The Playboy Club" over content matter, said the show's "dialogue might be excessively rude and crude."
"The scenes may be too explicit or the characterizations might seem offensive," Jeff Simpson, CEO of KSL's parent company, Bonneville International, told the Salt Lake City Tribune.
Barkin, who plays the grandmother to the surrogate mother on "The New Normal," shot back at the station and criticized their programming decision.
GLAAD has also come out in defense of the NBC comedy. "Same-sex families are a beloved part of American television thanks to shows like 'Modern Family', 'Glee' and 'Grey’s Anatomy,'" GLAAD President Herndon Graddick said in a statement. "While audiences, critics and advertisers have all supported LGBT stories, KSL is demonstrating how deeply out of touch it is with the rest of the country."
This isn't the first time "The New Normal" has caused a stir. The series came under fire from One Million Moms earlier in 2012. "I always find it to be interesting for people to make that decision before they've even seen it. The show is about tolerance -- it's a discussion of tolerance," executive producer Ryan Murphy said in response to the protest in July 2012. "Actually, if they watched it, I think they would like it."
"The New Normal" premieres Tues., Sept. 11 at 9:30 p.m. ET.
