'The Office' Finale: Steve Carell, As Michael Scott, Surprises Dwight At His Wedding (VIDEO)

After nine years, "The Office" wrapped its run on NBC with an hour-long retrospective leading into the series finale. For months, there has been speculation as to whether or not original series star Steve Carell would make a cameo. It's been talked around and vaguely denied by various people involved with the show, but never definitively.

So perhaps it wasn't a huge surprise when he showed up, but it was nevertheless handled beautifully and appropriately. Jim was Dwight's "bestest mensch" (i.e. best man) at his wedding, only he told Dwight that he couldn't be because he was younger than Dwight. And so he brought in a replacement.

Dwight turned around and saw Michael Scott in the doorway. "Michael. I can’t believe you came," he said.

"That’s what she said," Michael responded. "Best prank ever," Jim revealed to the camera.

As the night progressed, viewers learned that Michael had children now and had finally achieved the life he'd always wanted.

As for the rest of the employees of Dunder-Mifflin, ...Andy (Ed Helms) became the laughing stock of the internet and then found his footing and got a job at Cornell; Kelly (Mindy Kaling) and Ryan (B.J. Novak) ran off together at Dwight and Angel's wedding, even though he had a baby, who ended up in the arms of Nelly (Catherine Tate); Erin (Ellie Kemper) finally met her birth parents (Joan Cusack and Ed Begley Jr.); Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer) left Scranton for Austin, Texas; Oscar (Oscar Nunez) got his revenge on the senator by running against him; Dwight fired Kevin (Brian Baumgartner) and now he owns a bar ... and thinks he's gay; Toby (Paul Lieberstein) lives in New York and wants to write the great American novel; Creed (Creed Bratton) got escorted away by police after being on the lam for drug trafficking and such; Stanley (Leslie David Baker), who retired to Florida where he carved wooden birds, shared a sweet moment with Phyllis (Phyllis Smith) at Dwight and Angela's wedding; and Meredith (Kate Flannery) is still Meredith, but with slightly darker hair and a son who strips.

TVLine borrowed from Michael Scott in summing up the 75-minute event. "Though it was long in coming, 'The Office’s' emotional final episode went by too quickly and was, at times, hard to handle (that’s what she said).”

E! Online agreed, writing, "ALL. THE. HAPPY. TEARS.”
