They chose movie stars to host the Oscars, and so instead of the traditional comedic monologue, James Franco and Anne Hathaway made sure to emphasize their acting chops in their opening performance. By doing so, they took a page out of oft-host's Billy Crystal's book.
Franco and Hathaway placed themselves into scenes from the Best Picture nominees via "Inception"-style dream traveling through former host Alec Baldwin's subconscious.
Also involved: "Back To The Future". Just for fun.
Then came the monologue -- well, in this case, dialogue -- in which Franco chided Hathaway for not getting nominated like he did.
