In a world where so much goes to waste, and people buy things they don't need to keep up with the Jones', it seems like we are getting nowhere. So many of us have tons of things and space we don't need or use, yet there are others who don't know how they are going to get to work or find a place to sleep tonight. In order to try and share resources, cut down on costs, and even help the environment, the sharing economy was created. People have found advantages to offering their services and products for a good price. The rating systems that are used can also help good companies gain more customers, and help warn or encourage potential buyers depending on the rating.

The sharing economy is defined as owners renting out something they have, or using peer to peer services. There are usually rating systems in place to give the seller credibility and buyers peace of mind. The market is huge in the sharing economy, ranging anywhere from renting rooms to finding a doggie daycare for your next vacation. Not only does this help the buyer save a little money from buying local, but it helps those who sell make some extra cash. Most people who rent out things they own or sell services do not do it as a full time job, but they do it to supplement their income. In a declining economy, this is an excellent way for people to keep their heads above water by using the resources they already have.

The sharing economy has transformed the way we travel. Not only does it help us save money, so we can splurge on the important things, but it gives us more opportunities where it once was pretty bleak. Airbnb has modernized the way we find room and board while we are traveling. Instead of searching far and wide for the best price hotel room without compromising quality, we can rent out rooms at someone's home, entire houses, or even private cabins. It may seem sketchy at first, but that is where the rating system comes into play. You can read the reviews of others who have stayed there, and determine if it's a good idea for you.

The sharing economy also has a huge role in the eco-friendly movement. By hitching a ride using Uber or Lyft, you are reducing the number of cars on the road. You are sharing a car with the owner, instead of renting or driving your own. When you are renting products instead of purchasing your own, you are reducing your carbon footprint because of the resources it takes to manufacture products. The sharing economy has been increasing steadily for the past few years, and rightfully so. This new economy style is helping others think of new ways to be green and environmentally friendly, instead of being so wasteful. Some companies like EnergyStar use a rating system to inform potential customers about which appliances are more eco-friendly. This helps the customers save money on energy costs over time, and encourages companies to up their game and be environmentally conscious.

Although some people find it backwards or complicated, those who can see things from a different perspective know how monumental this movement is. By changing the way we do business, we are saving the environment and our pocketbooks at the same time.
