'The Vampire Diaries' Recap: Amara And Silas Have A Bloody Reunion In 'Death And The Maiden'

Big stuff happened this week in Mystic Falls. Big. Stuff. The episode began with possibly the best opening on record for "The Vampire Diaries." Silas is chilling at a bus stop in Philly with a couple when he begins opening up about his many problems. He told them about the Amara/Qetsiyah love triangle and how Qetsiyah turned Amara into stone "Medusa-style," but since they're both immortal they've just been waiting 2,000 years to meet up again. You know, normal stuff.

Silas then decides to give the young couple some sage advice: enjoy the time you have with your loved ones. To make his point, Silas then decides to liquefy the boyfriend's internal organs with his witch powers. The girlfriend goes sprinting off as her boyfriend collapses on the ground coughing up blood and Silas sighs, "Love is so damn fickle," he muses before getting on the bus headed back towards Virginia and Mystic Falls.

Now back in Mystic Falls, Stefan is suffering with some PTSD after his summer trapped in the safe in the quarry since Qetsiyah restored his memories (and his pain). He's having some traumatic dreams where he keeps reliving the moment where Stilas trapped him in the safe ("Hello, my shadow self").

Amara is currently in residence in the basement (dungeon) of the Salvatore mansion and crazy pants is certainly living up to her nickname. As Damon puts it, "Let's hope love is blind or at least deaf."

Silas and Amara, who are both now mortal, are ready and waiting for death since 2,000 years trapped and stuck as a petrified stone statue clearly was no picnic. Damon, Elena and Jeremy, however, have a different idea. Qetsiyah, who doesn't want Amara to die while she is the anchor to the other world, since that means that Amara and Silas will get to be together for eternity, is approached by Damon who suggests that Qetsiyah makes Bonnie the anchor and strips the role from Amara meaning that Amara would no longer be supernatural and would go to a different resting place than Silas. With Bonnie as the anchor, she would exist in the supernatural realm and in the real world, so she would essentially be resurrected.

Qetsiyah needs a lot of power to complete such a switch so she enlists the help, or rather the blood, of the three doppelgängers as an appropriate power source and sacrifice. Katherine agreed to help with the spell on the condition that Qetsiyah stops her rapid aging, since according to Dr. Maxfield, it looks like Katherine only has a few months to live.

Silas arrives mid-spell to throw a wrench in things, but Stefan grabs Amara and forces Silas to confront him since Stefan clearly has a bone to pick with the crazy witch.

Stefan fatally stabs Silas and then Amara turns the knife on herself to join her one true love. It's all very "Romeo and Juliet."

Damon arrives on the scene moments later, terrified that Amara died before Bonnie could be resurrected. He hastily tries to feed Amara some of his blood, but she isn't having it. "I've been in hell for 2,000 years," she mumbles, to which Damon replies, "What's another five minutes?"

But, it looks like the spell went through just in time because Bonnie is suddenly corporeal again and Jeremy, Elena, Caroline and Bonnie have a tearful reunion. Caroline is already planning on Bonnie's move into their dorm room.

Katherine approaches Qetsiyah to get her "cure," but no luck for the dying Katherine because Qetsiyah is 3,000 percent done with helping people extend their lives and she kills herself to follow Silas. Really, Katherine should not have been surprised by this turn of events, it's already been established that Qetsiyah does not know how to let things go.

Silas, Amara and Qetsiyah are finally gone so things should be good, but this is Mystic Falls where the next big trauma is just around the corner. Poor Bonnie can't seem to catch a break, because moments after Qetsiyah's suicide she appears to Bonnie and warns her that every supernatural creature that dies is going to be using Bonnie as a conduit to the other world, which will be painful, to say the least.

"The Vampire Diaries" airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
