'The Walking Dead' Premiere: Daryl And Merle Square Off (VIDEO)

'The Walking Dead': Brothers Daryl And Merle Square Off

A major shift in the makeup of the team came as a result of their excursion into Woodbury on the midseason premiere of "The Walking Dead." The action picked up right where it left off, with The Governor throwing Daryl and Merle into the ring to fight to the death. But brotherly bonds are not so easily broken.

Instead, a timely attack by Rick and his group gave the guys the diversion they needed to make their escape. It was a successful rescue, with everyone getting out of town in one piece. But then Merle's mouth got him in trouble again.

It was no real surprise that Rick rejected the idea of bringing Merle back to the prison. Forced to make a decision, Daryl chose his brother over his "family," as Glenn called them. It doesn't seem likely he'll stay gone, but at least there is the potential for the group to increase their numbers back at the prison.

That is, if Rick will agree to let Tyreese and his group of four join them. Rick remains adamantly against anyone ever trusting anyone again, but those of the group that have come to know Tyreese wanted him to reconsider -- especially Hershel.

The hour ended, though, with Rick lashing out like a crazed lunatic after seeing Lori looking down on him. There is clearly a lot more going on than simple mistrust. Is Rick losing it for real?

"The Walking Dead" continues on Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on AMC.
